Are Breast Implants Considered Prosthetics Like Artificial Limbs Also?
Double-Amputee and Supermodel Aimee Mullins versus Pamela Anderson
Discussing the Breast Implant as Prosthesis - Part 2
I asked this question in the hub forum, and couple guys gave me the more "formal" definition of prosthetics, which I understood before asking the question. The answers I got about breast implants is that since they don't replace a missing part, then they are not.
- For vanity, are they considered breast augmentation or enhancement?
- But I suppose if a woman gets them because she's had a mastectomy, they the implants then serve as prosthetics?
I asked the question with the double amputee Aimee Mullins in mind because she chooses in addition to using her prosthetics out of necessity--so she can walk and run--she uses them as fashion. Take a look at the pictures of the more than 12 pairs of legs she has for various ocassions. She's also holds world records in sprinting and long jump. And she's a professional model.
So I'll ak the question again but another way: Are Aimee's wooden boots designed by Alexander McQueen considered prosthetics? If so/not, then why?
